Why social media is kind of like driving in the snow

If you live in a part of the country where you don't have to drive in the snow, stop reading now. Nobody likes you. However, if you have to get out in the white flaky stuff to get to and from work, run errands, pick up kids, I hope you appreciate this.

It's a bit cliché-ish, but many of the social media pros say that businesses need to participate in social media because they no longer control THE conversation. That's true. But companies have never controlled THE conversation, in my opinion.

But companies can have control over THEIR conversation. Hear me / read me out.

Everybody is told that when you drive in the snow, you should take your time, be patient and leave some space around you. Take your time. Be patient. Leave some space. Sounds a bit like social media.

Then when you're out on the road, you never want to change direction aggressively, slam on the brakes, or lose control of your car. Don't change direction aggressively. Don't slam on the brakes. Don't lost control. Sounds a bit like social media.

And if you follow these rules, you can steer your car to where you want to go, barring an accident. And at times, everybody has an accident. There might be times where you slip or fishtail a bit, but you're in control and get to where you want to go. Sounds a bit like social media.

So while companies can't control THE conversation, they can certainly steer THEIR conversation where they want to take it. So what about those people in the SUVs who floor it, ride bumpers and pass people in slippery conditions. Don't worry, they'll end up in the ditch. Just like THEIR conversations will.

What do you think?

2009 Trending Topics on Twitter (@mashable)

This provides an interesting review of what people were talking about in 2009. I don't think anybody would have thought when Twitter started that it would encapsulate an entire year of news so well.

And, I'm pretty proud to see that Chuck Norris is on the list of people most Tweeted about.

My favorite holiday songs - Day #24 - Steve Martin's "5 Christmas Wishes"

Okay, this isn't really a song, but it's the perfect way of closing out my list of top 24 holiday songs. Merry Christmas everybody.

9 Twitter Directories You Should Be Listed On

Here’s my top 9 Twitter Directories to make sure you are listed on:

  1. Twellow – Right now the crown jewel of Twitter directories.  If you only bother with one on this list, choose Twellow.
  2. Wefollow – My personal favorite for the simple design and usability.  Built by Digg co-founder Kevin Rose.
  3. Twittercounter – My 2nd favorite as it acts as a statistical tool as well.
  4. Twitterholic – Another one of those directories that ranks users by followers.  Kind of fun to see where you rank based on filters.
  5. JustTweetIt – A directory of Twitter users sorted by categories. Nothing groundbreaking here, but just another large directory to list yourself to be found.
  6. Geofollow – GeoFollow allows you to list yourself geographically and categorically.
  7. Tweetfind – Free Twitter yellow and white pages directory.  Not the best looking directory, but front page on Google for “twitter directories”, so worth the listing.
  8. Twibs – Only really applicable to businesses, but everyone is selling something right?
  9. Hashtags – This is simply a directory of hashtag users on Twitter.

What do you think? Is their value in these directories? Do you use them?

My favorite holiday songs - Day #23 - Barenaked Ladies' "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" featuring Sarah McLachlan

This song is simply fantastic. I don't typically get into the religious Christmas songs but this is a great one. Simple accompaniment coupled with pure voices.

My favorite holiday songs - Day #22 - The Carpenters' "I'll be home for Christmas"

This is actually one of my least favorite "popular" Christmas songs, but The Carpenters have a great sound for holiday music.

My favorite holiday songs - Day #21 - Frank Sinatra & Cindy Lauper's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"

It was only recently that I first heard this song but the the combo of Frank and Cindy's voices work together well.

My favorite holiday songs - Day #19 - Andy Williams' "It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year"

It's a great Christmas classic, but has some of the strangest lyrics ever. I'm sure it was really great being a part of the Williams household with dad telling scary ghost stories at Christmas. Who does that?!
